- "Digital Photo Review": "In every other respect, the D5000 is exactly the solid product you'd expect of a camera put together from so many well-proven parts. It's a camera packed full of features, including a good set of RAW and JPEG processing tools and effects, and video has been implemented in such a way that it's there if you want it and doesn't get in the way if you don't."
- "Imaging Resource": "There are three major points that consumers looking at the new high points for the D5000 need to consider: Live view mode autofocus is slower than anyone would expect, averaging 2.3 seconds in controlled, optimized conditions. D-Movie mode is good, but it doesn't autofocus as you shoot, so following action will be more difficult; and you also have no manual exposure control to influence either aperture (for better depth of field control) or shutter speed (for use in sports situations) in D-Movie mode. The feature set of the Nikon D5000 is more complicated than the D60 or D40, so be prepared to dig deeper and read the manual to more thoroughly enjoy the Nikon D5000."
- "Engadget": "For the DSLR newcomer, we view the D5000 as a perfect device for those willing to pony up the $850 (kit) / $729 (body only), but only if you're honestly not planning on utilizing the video mode extensively."
- "Digital Camera Review": "The D5000 is essentially a cheaper version of the D90 ... so if you can live with using only AF-S lenses and a smaller viewfinder then the D5000 is a great low-cost alternative to the D90."
- "ePhotozine": "My only concern with this camera is that there's little that appears to be new in it. It's the same sensor as the D300 and D90, same processor, same video system as the D90 and this makes me wonder whether costs have been cut to ensure company longevity."
- "CamcorderInfo.com": "The reality is, that Nikon still has a lot of kinks to work out before its DSLR models can really compete with any high-end HD camcorder."
- "Photography Blog": "In summary, the Nikon D5000 is a fairly compact and admirably quiet DSLR that inherits the self-cleaning 12-megapixel sensor, 11-point AF module, Live View and video recording capability and extensive menu system of the bigger, heavier and more expensive D90, and the infopanel-driven operation of the smaller, lighter D60, while adding an articulated LCD to the mix. The result is a versatile and unobtrusive little DSLR that is very well suited to a broad range of photographers and photographic tasks."
- "DCResource": "the Nikon D5000 is a very nice digital SLR that takes most of the good stuff from the D90 and puts it into a more compact, less expensive body. The D5000 doesn't support autofocus on that many lenses, so if you have a collection of older Nikkor glass, you may want to consider stepping up to the D90 (it's only about $170 more)."
- "Camera Labs": "If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly DSLR though with powerful features and image quality to match, the Nikon D5000 is a great choice, and comes Highly Recommended. If it really does replace both the D60 and D40 though, Nikon now has a gap at the truly affordable end of the range."
- "CNet": "As long as you don't get as hung up as I did on its operational quirks or have high expectations of shooting video, there's plenty to like about the Nikon D5000--especially if you're most interested in its core aptitudes of a wealth of features, speedy shooting, and high-quality photographs for the money."
- "PC World": "Just be aware that to maximize your results, you'll have to learn your way around this camera's settings."
